The Atlanta Campaign

v1.0.1 / TOC (5 chapters) / 01 may 26 / greg goebel

* America's "War Between The States" took place primarily in two battle theaters: one in the East, focused in Virginia, and one in the West, originally focused on the Mississippi River, but with a secondary effort on the adjoining Tennessee River. The effort down the Mississippi was effectively complete with the fall of Vicksburg, Mississippi, in the summer of 1863, with the focus of combat in the West then shifting to the upper reaches of the Tennessee. That led to the violent Battle of Chickamauga Creek in the fall of 1863, which ultimately was a Confederate failure -- and opened the door to a Federal invasion of Georgia in the spring of 1864, leading to the capture of Atlanta late that summer. This document provides a history and description of the Atlanta campaign. A list of illustration credits is included at the end.
